Jack Hemmings, a 102-year-old British veteran and former squadron leader in the Royal Air Force, achieved a remarkable feat by flying a Spitfire to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), a charity he helped establish. Hemmings, believed to be the oldest pilot to ever fly the iconic World War II aircraft, undertook a 20-minute flight from a southern England airfield to raise funds for MAF.Â
Hemmings described the experience as “absolutely delightful” despite acknowledging the “very bumpy” ride and his own rustiness after years away from the cockpit. The endeavor aimed to support MAF’s mission of providing humanitarian air service, delivering crucial aid to remote regions worldwide.
