The Army’s regulation, buried within Army Regulation 360-1, prohibits the use of Army aviation assets to transport individuals dressed as Santa Claus or other holiday-related characters, both military and civilian, on or off military installations. This regulation has been in place for over two decades, with its original intent being somewhat unclear. While some suggest it was added for propriety or safety reasons, the Army has occasionally made exceptions for Santa’s appearances in support of holiday missions like Operation Toy Drop and Operation Santa Claus. In contrast, other branches of the military, such as the Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard, seem to have no such restrictions on Santa’s use of their aviation assets, allowing him to continue his airborne escapades during the holiday season.
