Grady Kurpasi, a retired Marine who served two decades in the military, joined the International Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine during the conflict in 2022. Despite his family’s reluctance, Kurpasi was driven to use his combat skills to stop war crimes. Tragically, Kurpasi went missing in Ukraine and was not heard from for over a year, prompting his family and friends to investigate his whereabouts.

Key Points:

  1. Grady Kurpasi was one of about 100 Americans who joined more than 20,000 volunteers in the International Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine following the conflict breakout in 2022.
  2. Despite having a wife and 13-year-old daughter in the US, Kurpasi was driven to use his combat skills honed from serving in the Marines, stating that Russian war crimes against Ukrainian civilians needed to be stopped.
  3. Kurpasi’s family and friends, unaware of his participation in combat, believed he was only advising the Ukrainians. This misunderstanding heightened concern and panic when Kurpasi went missing in Ukraine.
  4. To locate Kurpasi, his former Marine friends, George Heath and Don Turner, partnered with intelligence professionals and NGOs, amassing a comprehensive dossier on his disappearance and conducting months of searching.
  5. Throughout the process, everyone maintained hope that Kurpasi would return alive, highlighting his profound impact on his community and the ongoing uncertainty regarding his fate.
