A new study published in JAMA Oncology reveals that a few minutes of “vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity” (VILPA) can significantly decrease cancer risk. This type of activity includes simple, sporadic movements such as climbing stairs or power walking. VILPA, which doesn’t require a gym membership or financial investment, has previously been associated with reductions in all-cause mortality. The findings support VILPA as an accessible means of cancer prevention, particularly among those who don’t engage in regular exercise.

Key Points:

  1. Definition of VILPA: Vigorous Intermittent Lifestyle Physical Activity (VILPA) refers to brief and sporadic activities like ascending stairs or power walking. It can be easily integrated into daily routines and doesn’t require a gym or personal trainer.
  2. Effects on Cancer Risk: The recent study showed that engaging in VILPA was associated with a 17 to 18 percent decrease in cancer risk, based on a prospective cohort study involving over 22,000 non-exercising adults.
  3. Previous Findings: A 2022 study found that around four minutes of VILPA led to a 26 to 30 percent reduction in all-cause mortality.
  4. Accessible for Everyone: VILPA is seen as a promising intervention for cancer prevention among individuals who are unable or unmotivated to exercise in leisure time.
  5. Everyday Integration: Simple activities such as carrying all grocery bags in one trip or sneaking bouts of activity into commutes or shopping can be considered part of VILPA, making it easy for people to add these activities to their daily routines.
