A 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove a Mini Cooper into a labor union demonstration in Munich on Thursday morning, injuring 30 people, including children.
The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m., when demonstrators from the service workers’ union ver.di were marching through the city center. According to police, the suspect overtook a police vehicle escorting the protest and accelerated into the crowd.

Police identified the driver as Farhad N., an Afghan national who arrived in Germany in 2016. His asylum application was rejected, but he was allowed to remain under a suspended deportation order.
The suspect was arrested after the police fired a shot at his vehicle.
Counter-terrorism police have taken over the investigation, citing signs of the suspect’s “extremist background,” according to authorities.
The attack occurred just days before the Munich Security Conference, which will host world leaders, diplomats, and security officials. Officials say there is no link to the event.
Germany has faced a series of violent incidents involving migrants in recent months, including a deadly knife attack in Bavaria last month and a car-ramming at a Christmas market in December.
