The Biden Administration is threatening to ban TikTok in the US unless its Chinese owner, ByteDance, promises to sell its stake due to national security concerns.

The Biden Administration has threatened to ban TikTok nationwide unless its Chinese owner, ByteDance, promises to sell its stake in the company due to concerns about the app’s link to China and potential national security threats. The demand for divestiture marks a major escalation in negotiations that have been ongoing for over two years. TikTok has grown in popularity to over 1 billion active users, including over 100 million in the US, leading to concerns that the Chinese Communist Party could have unlimited access to sensitive data the app collects on Americans. Several countries have already banned TikTok or restricted access to it on government-issued devices. TikTok has pledged to spend $1.5 billion to safeguard US user data and content from Chinese government access or influence, but it remains to be seen if divestment would solve the American national security concerns over the app.
