The conflict in Ukraine has turned into a military disaster for Russia, and a 2018 battle in Syria showed cracks in Russia’s military might.
One month after Russia invaded Ukraine, the conflict has become a military disaster for Russia. The Pentagon estimated that over 7,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, while NATO believes the number could be as high as 15,000. Reports describe mass desertions and fratricide on the front lines, and Russian generals continue to die. In 2018, a four-hour battle in Syria between Russian and American forces demonstrated cracks in Russia’s military might, as a small force of American commandos was able to defeat a much larger enemy force. This victory worked as a deterrent a month later when a similar enemy force began a buildup near American forces.
