A video shared widely online allegedly shows Ukrainian Anti-Aircraft firing numerous rounds against a major drone assault over Odesa last week. Russian forces launched waves of drones, including Iranian-made Shahed-136 models, targeting critical infrastructure in the southern port city. Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems reportedly shot down 53 drones, though around 30 evaded interception, causing significant damage. The dramatic visuals of tracer rounds streaking through the darkness has circulated widely online, prompting observers to make comparisons to science-fiction like star wars.

The assault targeted Odesa’s port, a key hub for Ukraine’s military logistics. Russian sources claimed strikes destroyed ammunition, vehicle components, and equipment for Western-supplied weapons, including systems used to maintain Mirage 2000 jets. Pro-Russian commentators also alleged that hidden logistics bases and military repair units were hit, potentially disrupting Ukraine’s frontline supply chains.
Ukrainian defenses, including the German-supplied Gepard anti-aircraft system, played a crucial role in countering the attack. The Gepard’s rapid-fire autocannons were deployed to neutralize the drones. However, the high volume of targets overwhelmed defenses at times, and Russian sources claimed one Gepard system was destroyed.

Some intercepted drones crashed into civilian areas, damaging homes and infrastructure on streets such as Kosmonavtiv and Novoselskyi.
The attack on Odesa was part of a broader Russian campaign targeting multiple Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia. Meanwhile, Russia reported intercepting 34 Ukrainian drones over its territories, including Kursk and Crimea.
