The United States is reviewing Ukraine’s request for long-range Tomahawk missiles to bolster its defenses against Russia, Vice President JD Vance said Sunday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked President Donald Trump during last week’s United Nations General Assembly to approve sales of Tomahawks to European allies that would transfer them to Kyiv.
On Fox News Sunday, Vance said Trump will make the “final determination” on the proposal.
Tomahawk cruise missiles, with a range of 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles), would give Ukraine the ability to strike deep into Russian positions. Kyiv has sought long-range weapons for months to counter ongoing missile and drone attacks.
Trump had previously rejected requests to provide long range systems for Ukraine, but his stance has recently shifted, allowing NATO to purchase American systems for Kyiv.
Just this week, he said Ukraine could win the war against Russia with support from the EU and NATO. He added that the U.S. will provide weapons to NATO to support Ukraine, saying: “We will continue supplying weapons to NATO for them to use as they see fit.”
