DOJ Indicts 4 in Weapon Smuggling Case After Operation Results in 2 Navy SEAL Deaths

The U.S. Department of Justice has unveiled an indictment against four individuals for their alleged involvement in the shipment of Iranian-made weapons components to Houthi rebels in Yemen, marking a significant enforcement action against illicit arms trafficking. The accused, identified as Muhammad Pahlawan, Mohammed Mazhar, Ghufran Ullah, and Izhar Muhammad, were apprehended following an operation by U.S. Navy SEALs in the Arabian Sea near Somalia’s coast.

During the operation, which took place last month, the SEALs intercepted a vessel suspected of transporting these weapons. In a tragic turn of events, Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher Chambers and Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Ingram lost their lives amidst the challenging conditions at sea.

The charges against the defendants include providing materially false information to the U.S. Coast Guard upon their arrest, with Pahlawan facing additional accusations of unlawfully transporting a warhead intended for use by the Houthis against both commercial and American vessels.

FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the bureau’s commitment to thwarting the Iranian government’s efforts to arm the Houthis. Meanwhile, the Justice Department has taken steps to detain the ten other individuals captured during the operation as witnesses, reinforcing the legal proceedings aimed at holding the accused accountable.
