On Friday, President Joe Biden announced that Israel has put forward a three-part plan aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and securing the release of hostages held there for the past eight months. The plan was relayed to Hamas through Qatari mediation, reflecting intensive diplomatic efforts by the Biden administration.
The proposal’s first phase involves a six-week complete ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas of Gaza. The first stage also includes the release of women and children held hostage and the introduction of substantial humanitarian aid, with 600 trucks of assistance entering Gaza daily. During this phase, Israel and Hamas will negotiate a permanent ceasefire, despite anticipated challenges.
The second phase will begin once all agreements are reached and involves the release of all remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. The final phase focuses on major reconstruction efforts in Gaza and the return of the remains of deceased hostages.
British Foreign Minister David Cameron has called on Hamas to accept the proposal, emphasizing the potential for a permanent peace if all parties take appropriate steps. Hamas has responded positively to Biden’s announcement, expressing readiness to engage constructively if Israel commits to the terms.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has confirmed authorization for the country’s negotiating team to present the proposal, aiming for the release of captives and the dismantling of Hamas’s military capabilities.
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions and criticism of Biden’s support for Israel, especially from the far-left wing of the Democratic Party. Biden’s stance has faced scrutiny due to the high civilian toll in Gaza, with over 36,000 Palestinians reportedly killed since the conflict began in October.
The plan’s success hinges on complex negotiations and the cooperation of all involved parties. As the conflict continues to impact civilians, the international community watches closely, hoping this proposal might pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
