Ukrainian combat group Timur from Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR), have been active in the Republic of Sudan, targeting Wagner Group mercenaries. Video evidence obtained exclusively by the Kyiv Post showcases the interrogation of captured Wagner mercenaries.
In the interrogation, the mercenaries share that their objective in Sudan was to overthrow the local government, with the operation involving around 100 personnel who traveled via the Central African Republic to Khartoum. The video also displays the aftermath of confrontations, with damaged military vehicles and the body of a soldier donning the Wagner PMC badge. These operations are part of a broader campaign promised by HUR Chief Kyrylo Budanov in May 2023 to target Russian war criminals worldwide. The Wagner Group has a history of activity in Sudan, particularly their support for the 2019 coup and ongoing arms supplies to the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Strategic dialogue between Ukraine and Sudan was also evidenced by an impromptu meeting between President Zelensky and the head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, discussing the threat posed by Russian-financed illegal armed groups.
