A U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton surveillance drone disappeared from flight tracking systems over the Persian Gulf on Wednesday after declaring an in-flight emergency and rapidly losing altitude, according to flight tracking data cited by defense observers.
The uncrewed aircraft had completed a roughly three-hour patrol over the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz and was reportedly returning to Naval Air Station Sigonella in Italy when it encountered trouble, according to the data.
Tracking information showed the aircraft crossing into Saudi Arabian airspace before making a sudden turn to the northeast in the direction of Iran.
Shortly before disappearing from public tracking systems, the Triton began a rapid descent from its typical cruising altitude of about 50,000 feet to below 10,000 feet over a period of roughly 15 minutes, the data showed.
On its way back to base, the US Navy MQ-4C Triton reconnaissance drone that had been patrolling the Strait of Hormuz took a turn towards Iran, squawked code 7700 (general emergency), and started descending, falling off ADS-B as it dropped under 10k feet. pic.twitter.com/1Ki8OsEk9k

The aircraft’s transponder initially broadcast code 7400, which indicates a loss of the communication link between a drone and its ground operators. It later switched to 7700, a general emergency code used to signal an in-flight emergency. The codes do not specify the cause or severity of the incident.

An official statement on the incident was not immediately available, and the fate of the aircraft remains unclear.
The incident comes just two days after the U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire following more than a month of fighting in the Middle East.
The MQ-4C Triton is a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned surveillance aircraft used by the U.S. Navy for maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. It is designed to operate for extended periods over large ocean areas, collecting real-time data for fleet commanders.
