General Michael Kurilla, head of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), made an expedited visit to Israel to meet with Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen Hezi Halevi. This visit was prompted by Iranian threats following an Israeli airstrike that destroyed an Iranian consulate in Damascus. During his visit, Kurilla discussed strategies and readiness with top Israeli military leaders in light of the potential for regional escalations.
The Pentagon’s press secretary, Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, confirmed the purpose of Kurilla’s visit was to assess and ensure the readiness of the U.S. and Israeli military forces amidst the ongoing threats. Discussions also included the reaffirmation of U.S. commitment to Israel’s security, as stated by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a recent call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari emphasized Israel’s preparedness for various scenarios, stating that Israel is equipped for both defense and offensive operations. He noted the persistent challenge posed by Iran and its proxies in the region, indicating that any direct attack from Iranian territory would clearly expose Iran’s aggressive intentions.
This visit also follows statements from Iranian officials vowing retaliation for the attack on the Damascus consulate, which resulted in the death of several Iranian officers. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian communicated through Oman that Iran’s response would aim to avoid major escalation, reflecting a controlled approach to the situation.
