U.S. President Donald Trump said NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft violating its airspace and said Ukraine could reclaim all its occupied territory and “maybe even go further than that.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that with the support of the European Union and NATO funding, Ukraine is “in a position to fight and win all of Ukraine back in its original form.” The statement marked a reversal of his earlier position, in which he suggested Kyiv might need to cede land to end the war with Russia.
Trump added that Russia has been “fighting aimlessly for three and a half years, a war that should have taken a real military power less than a week to win,” and noted that with Russia facing serious economic trouble, “this is an opportune moment for Ukraine to act.”
“We will continue supplying weapons to NATO for them to use as they see fit,” Trump further said.
When asked by reporters if the U.S. would support NATO in a potential war with Russia, Trump replied: “Depends on the circumstance, but you know we’re very strong toward NATO.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the remarks. “It’s a big shift. Very positive,” he told reporters, later adding in a Fox News interview that Trump “understands, for today, that we can’t just swap territories.”
On Monday, drones suspected to be Russian temporarily shut down airports in Copenhagen and Oslo. These incidents come amid a wave of drone incursions across Europe, including in Romania, Poland and Estonia.
