January 19th – Ukrainian forces executed a drone strike on an oil storage depot in Klintsy, a Russian town near the Ukrainian border. The strike resulted in a large fire at the Klintsevskaya oil depot. The attack, which took place approximately 60 miles from the border, involved a drone that Ukrainian officials claimed was part of a retaliatory measure for recent Russian assaults on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. The Bryansk governor, Alexander Bogomaz, reported that the depot’s air defenses managed to disable the drone with electronic jamming. However, the drone’s munitions fell on the depot, igniting the blaze and necessitating the evacuation of 32 residents from the vicinity
The fire spread over a 10,000 square-foot area. Russian emergency services dispatched 13 fire trucks and 140 firefighters to control the fire. This incident follows a pattern of increased Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, including another significant strike on a major oil loading terminal in St. Petersburg.
Ukraine’s intelligence directorate indicated plans for more such attacks, capitalizing on the redeployment of most of Russia’s air defense and electronic warfare systems to occupied areas of Ukraine.
