The transformation of the internet from its idealistic inception, as created by engineer Ray Tomlinson, to its current state, where commercial interests, a lack of privacy, and misinformation prevail. It uses the narrative of a hypothetical digital native, Chrissy, to illustrate the barrage of targeted advertising, cyberbullying, and distorted information flow typical in today’s online environment. The piece argues for a shift in focus towards creating a more enriching and authentic internet that values quality and depth over monetization and viral content.

Key Points:

  1. The internet, initially a tool to democratize information and connectivity, has become a platform often characterized by a lack of privacy, misinformation, and commercial dominance.
  2. Current issues with the internet include excessive targeted advertising, lack of privacy, cyberbullying, the spread of misinformation, and a significant digital divide.
  3. The problems faced today have resulted from over-optimization for engagement and virality at the expense of content depth and interaction authenticity.
  4. This has led to a largely hostile online environment where users’ data is commoditized and sensational or provocative content is rewarded.
  5. The article argues for the creation of a more wholesome internet that prioritizes quality, depth, authenticity, and active engagement over passive consumption.
