The Shin Bet security agency revealed on Thursday that Iranian intelligence services have been using fake social media accounts to recruit Israeli civilians for tasks that could compromise state security. The agency identified numerous bogus profiles on platforms such as Telegram, which were utilized to contact Israelis and lure them into potentially harmful activities.
The uncovered profiles include usernames like Itamar201020, Gal01110, Mariiyam1997, PAndersion198, hadas99, Ramon_nkl96, צבא העם (people’s army), VIP EMPLOYMENT, עבודה באזור י-ם והסביבה (work in Jerusalem and the area), and דרושים עובדים – חיפה (employees wanted – Haifa). These accounts were designed to appear legitimate, offering “interesting and exciting” job opportunities with promises of high pay. The posts typically included links directing users to provide their personal details.
According to the Shin Bet, several Israeli civilians who received these suspicious messages reported them to Israeli security authorities. This proactive response helped in identifying and monitoring the fake profiles. The Shin Bet emphasized the importance of public vigilance online, advising against sharing personal information with unknown accounts and urging people to report any suspicious activities.
This incident is not the first of its kind; Iranian operatives have previously attempted to target Israelis via social media. In light of these findings, the Shin Bet reiterated the need for the public to maintain heightened awareness, avoid engaging with unknown sources, and report any suspicious online interactions to the appropriate authorities.
