The Israeli military has recovered the bodies of five Israelis taken hostage by Hamas during the attack on southern Israel on October 7. The bodies were found in a tunnel in Khan Younis, located in the southern Gaza Strip, following a detailed intelligence operation.
According to Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the operation utilized intelligence that had been gathered and analyzed over recent weeks. The bodies were discovered in a tunnel approximately 20 meters underground and 200 meters long, situated beneath an area previously designated as a humanitarian zone. The recovered hostages included kindergarten teacher Maya Goren, as well as soldiers Sergeant Major Ravid Aryeh Katz, Master Sergeant Oren Goldin, Staff Sergeant Tomer Ahimas, and Sergeant Kiril Brodski.
The military confirmed that Maya Goren was murdered in captivity, while the soldiers were killed during the initial Hamas attack and their bodies subsequently abducted.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the U.S. Congress on the same day, highlighted the ongoing efforts to secure the release of remaining hostages but did not provide specifics on a potential deal with Hamas. Currently, 111 of the 251 hostages taken by Hamas are still held in Gaza, with 39 presumed dead by the military.
The discovery was facilitated by Shin Bet agents and troops from the IDF’s 98th Division, leveraging intelligence from interrogations of detained terrorists in Gaza.

A video showing the recovery, filmed by an IDF reservist, resulted in the soldier’s dismissal from reserve duty and a 10-day jail sentence for violating military protocols. The video depicted five body bags being transported out of Gaza in a military vehicle.
