Sebastian Demmel’s workshop, a cottage nestled in the Bavarian hills, stands as a testament to a unique, half-century-long relationship between a German craftsman and the U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF). The woodcarver’s journey with the American soldiers began when he was a child, witnessing them in his village. It was a brief encounter that would grow into a lifelong connection.
Demmel, who began his apprenticeship at 15, is now an acclaimed figure in the special operations community. His work, spanning over 50 years, is not just a collection of wooden sculptures and plaques. Each piece, a “Demmel,” is a representation of the core values of excellence, creativity, and respect that define the SOF community. Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Dorsh, a senior enlisted leader with the 10th Special Forces Group, remarks on the importance of Demmel’s work: “When the guys get a plaque or a statue, and it’s a Demmel, that means something.”
The craftsman’s dedication and skill earned him the title of Honorary Green Beret from the U.S. Special Operations Command in 2020 and the recognition as an Honorary Original at the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) 70th Anniversary Ball in 2022. Reflecting on these honors, Demmel expressed, “It’s really one of the biggest things in my life… it’s like a dream.”
The impact of Demmel’s work goes beyond the physical art. His home and workshop have become a meeting place for U.S. soldiers and veterans, notably the “Snow Bros,” a group of Special Forces veterans who visit annually. These visits are a testament to the deep personal connections that have grown from this artistic partnership.
Lt. Gen. Francis Beaudette, former commander of United States Army Special Operations Command, emphasized the significance of Demmel’s work, noting that the greatest gift he received throughout his career was a hand-carved Demmel memento. The relationship is reciprocal, with Demmel cherishing each interaction and the friendships formed over the years.
