A U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone is believed to have conducted a precision strike in Idlib Province, Syria, reportedly eliminating a high-ranking figure affiliated with Al-Qaeda. The strike took place near the town of al-Dana, specifically in the vicinity of the Tiba restaurant. The target is said to have been Abu Imran al-Shami, the internal security chief of Hurras al-Din, an Al-Qaeda-linked group that had recently announced its dissolution.

The extent and shape of the damage to the vehicle—identified as a silver Hyundai—suggests the use of the AGM-114R9X Hellfire missile, also known as the “Flying Ginsu” or “Ninja” missile. This specialized munition is designed for precision assassinations, utilizing kinetic energy and deployable blades rather than an explosive warhead to minimize collateral damage. Similar strikes utilizing the R9X have been observed in northern Syria over the past several months.
Initial reports confirmed the death of one individual, though some sources suggest that the target may have been a Tunisian fighter previously affiliated with Hurras al-Din. At the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation of Abu Imran al-Shami’s death. The operation would mark yet another U.S. counterterrorism strike against remnants of Al-Qaeda in Syria, particularly in Idlib, a region where the U.S. has previously conducted targeted eliminations of high-profile jihadist leaders.
While U.S. officials have not publicly acknowledged the strike, the use of an MQ-9 Reaper and the apparent deployment of an R9X missile align with previous U.S. operations in the region.
Video footage posted to X(Formerly Twitter) allegedly show the inside of the vehicle after the apparent strike.
