The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia launched an anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, targeting individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. The operation took place in the residential areas of Makhachkala and Kaspiysk, where FSB forces surrounded several apartments based on intelligence regarding the suspects’ whereabouts.
Authorities evacuated residents from neighboring buildings and established a regime with special measures and temporary restrictions in the affected areas. The National Anti-Terrorist Committee (NAC) reported the operation aimed at neutralizing a threat posed by armed persons planning terrorist attacks within the country.
During the operation, three suspects were detained, and law enforcement confiscated automatic firearms, ammunition, and an improvised explosive device (IED). The suspects had been renting apartments in the cities, with investigations revealing the locations used for plotting terrorist crimes. The operation concluded without any reported injuries or casualties among civilians or FSB personnel.
The operation was part of heightened security measures following a recent terrorist attack in the Moscow Oblast. Sergei Melikov, the head of Dagestan, praised the effectiveness of the operation and the role of tightened security in identifying the terrorists.
This operation in Dagestan follows a separate incident where the FSB detained three individuals from a Central Asian country planning to conduct a terrorist attack in the Stavropol region. The counterterrorist operation regime in Dagestan was lifted the morning following the operation, signaling a return to normalcy in the affected areas.
