Ecuadorean law enforcement officials have apprehended Vicente Angulo, a notorious gang leader affiliated with the Los Lobos gang, during a military-led operation. Known by his alias “Commander Vicente,” Angulo was a pivotal figure within the gang, overseeing illegal mining activities in the Ponce Enriquez region of Ecuador. The gang’s illegal operations extend to approximately 20 gold mines in the area, contributing to the country’s challenges with organized crime.
The arrest of Vicente and 12 additional suspects marks a significant effort by the Ecuadorean government to combat the escalating violence and criminal activities orchestrated by gangs such as Los Lobos. These gangs are implicated in a wide range of illicit activities, including drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and other forms of violence that have plagued the nation.
During the operation, authorities seized $200,000 in cash, along with a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives.
This crackdown is part of a broader national initiative aimed at restoring security and peace for the citizens of Ecuador. Earlier in the year, the Ecuadorean president took a firm stance against gang violence by declaring war on such groups and categorizing them as terrorist organizations. This declaration has led to the deployment of military forces and the suspension of civil liberties for individuals associated with these gangs.
