Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who had been missing for over two weeks, has been transferred to a penal colony in the Arctic, according to his allies. Navalny’s whereabouts had raised concerns among his supporters and Western governments. He is now in IK-3 in the settlement of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, a remote and harsh location above the Arctic Circle. Navalny was initially imprisoned after surviving poisoning and was later sentenced to 19 years on extremism charges. His transfer is seen as an attempt by Russian authorities to isolate him further ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in March.
