A police officer and a civilian were killed in a shooting at a hotel in Montreal, Canada, Monday morning, authorities said.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher said officers were responding to reports of shots fired at the Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Midtown when they encountered a gunman on the ground and exchanged gunfire.
Videos of the scene showed an armed man in tactical-style clothing exchanging gunfire with police in the street as officers took cover behind vehicles and street fixtures.

Officials identified the victims as Montreal police Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, 34, and 68-year-old Michel Mizrahi. A second officer was seriously wounded but is now in stable condition, according to police.
The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Seth Scott Hatfield of Lethbridge, Alberta. He also died after exchanging gunfire with police who were responding to the incident.
Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the attack. Investigators are now reviewing a 104-page manifesto attributed to Hatfield that reportedly contains antisemitic and anti-Zionist remarks.
The Montreal police said Benredouan’s death is a significant loss for the force. “His demise is a great loss to our organization,” the service said. “His sense of duty, dedication and professionalism will always be remembered.”
