Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that the U.S. is deploying an additional few thousand troops and aircraft to the Middle East.
The Pentagon confirmed that the deployment will include multiple fighter squadrons, such as F-15, F-16, F-22 fighter jets, and A-10 warplanes, along with associated personnel. While the exact number of additional troops has not been disclosed, a Pentagon official estimated it to be between 2,000 and 3,000. These forces will join the 40,000 U.S. troops already stationed across the region in countries like Iraq and Syria.
Defense Department officials stated that the reinforcements would bolster security for U.S. forces and enhance the defense of Israel. Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh emphasized that these added assets would ensure the U.S. is prepared to respond to a range of contingencies.
In addition to the troop deployment, Defense Secretary Austin has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to stay in the Gulf of Oman. The USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group, which includes a Marine expeditionary unit, will also remain in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Pentagon has emphasized that the deployment of additional troops is intended to support the security of U.S. personnel and facilities in the Middle East and to provide greater deterrence against any threats from Iran or its proxies. Austin has made clear that any aggression toward U.S. forces will be met with a swift response, stating, “The United States will take every necessary measure to defend our people.”
President Joe Biden also addressed the situation, calling Nasrallah’s death “a measure of justice” for his role in attacks that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians.
