Governor Kathy Hochul has directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop a new nuclear power plant in upstate New York, the first major nuclear project in the United States in over 15 years.
At an event in Niagara County on Monday, Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the urgent need to expand New York’s power infrastructure to support emerging technologies.
Hochul, who called the new project a “critical energy initiative” to ensure reliability, affordability, and clean energy, said nuclear power is needed to support industries like semiconductor and artificial intelligence manufacturing.
“If we don’t increase New York’s electricity supply in a major way, we’re going to risk losing our opportunities,” Hochul added.
The state has not picked a specific location yet. According to reports, sites will be chosen based on infrastructure, safety, available land and labor, and whether communities support the project.
The plant is reportedly planned to generate at least 1 gigawatt of electricity, enough to power approximately one million homes. It will utilize advanced nuclear technology engineered to produce zero emissions.
The project is part of New York’s plan to replace over 2 gigawatts of fossil fuel capacity and meet rising energy demands.
New York closed the Indian Point plant near New York City in 2021 over safety concerns.
