Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that Hamas would not be allowed to govern Gaza after the ongoing war, emphasizing Israel’s commitment to dismantling its power.
Netanyahu made the statement during a visit to the Netzarim Corridor. Neither he nor military leaders have detailed plans for Gaza’s governance once Hamas is removed.
The war, which began after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, continues with heavy fighting in northern Gaza. Israeli forces aim to neutralize remaining Hamas fighters while controlling strategic areas like the Netzarim Corridor.
Defense Minister Israel Katz, accompanying Netanyahu, stated that the priority remains rescuing hostages and ensuring Hamas cannot return to power.
At the same event, Netanyahu introduced a $5 million reward for anyone who secures the release of an Israeli hostage and promised safe passage out of Gaza for those who assist. The initiative targets the recovery of 97 hostages believed to still be held by Hamas, including seven Americans and the bodies of at least 34 confirmed dead.
Netanyahu stressed the importance of recovering all hostages. He also warned that harming captives would result in severe consequences. Critics, including families of hostages, questioned the effectiveness of the offer, accusing Netanyahu of stalling negotiations and endangering captives by prolonging the war. Some argued that his proposal focuses on tactical gains rather than meaningful resolutions.
While Netanyahu insists Israel can fight Hamas and recover hostages simultaneously, defense officials have warned that continuing the war risks the lives of those still in captivity. Despite the challenges, Netanyahu said: “The choice is in your hands, but the result will be the same. We will bring everyone home.”
Casualties in Gaza have risen significantly, with Hamas reporting tens of thousands of deaths, including civilians, though independent verification is limited. Mediation efforts, including those by Qatar, have stalled, and a ceasefire appears unlikely.
