After learning that illegal shipments of fentanyl, the chemical that causes the majority of drug overdose deaths in the US, were coming from China, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador appeals to China for assistance.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has stated that his country has evidence of illegal shipments of the opioid drug fentanyl arriving from China. A container with hidden packages of the drug was seized in the Pacific port of Lázaro Cárdenas. The president said he would request help from the Chinese government to stop the shipments. The US authorities consider fentanyl to be the primary cause of drug overdose deaths in the country. Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin, and 67% of the 107,375 US deaths from drug overdoses or poisonings in 2021 were related to fentanyl or similar opioids. President López Obrador has said that fentanyl is not produced in Mexico but is obtained by drug gangs from suppliers in Asia.
