A U.S. Marine died Sunday after being injured in a Humvee rollover during a training exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California. The Marine Corps identified the soldier as Staff Sgt. Jerry L. Betzold, 26, of Avon, Indiana. The incident occurred on Saturday, and Betzold succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The rollover happened during Service Level Training Exercise 5-24, a major training event for operational Marine units. Betzold, an infantry Marine assigned to the Tactical Training Exercise Control Group (TTECG), was initially treated at the Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital at Twentynine Palms before being evacuated to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of the rollover remains under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). In a statement, Capt. Johnathon Huizar, spokesman for the combat center, confirmed the ongoing investigation into the incident.
Staff Sgt. Betzold joined the Marine Corps in August 2016 and was promoted to his current rank in March 2024. His commendations include three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, two Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, and several other accolades. Col. David Hart, Director of TTECG, praised Betzold, stating, “Staff Sergeant Jerry Betzold represents all that is good and pure in our nation and Corps. His loss is deeply felt across our Marine Corps family.”
Betzold’s family, friends, and fellow Marines mourn his passing. Avon Schools issued a statement expressing their condolences.
This tragic incident is the first ground vehicle mishap in the Marine Corps this year, according to Naval Safety Command statistics. The last fatal rollover occurred in December 2023 at Camp Pendleton, California, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
Rollovers are a significant risk in military training exercises. A 2021 Government Accountability Office report noted that over 120 soldiers and Marines have died in non combat vehicle incidents over the past decade.
