Israel’s military announced on Thursday that Mohammed Deif, the top commander of Hamas’ military wing, was killed in a July airstrike in Khan Yunis, Gaza. This confirmation follows extensive efforts over decades to target Deif, who is believed to have orchestrated the October 7 attacks on southern Israel. The strike, which hit a displacement camp, resulted in the deaths of at least 90 Palestinians.
Deif’s death is considered a significant achievement for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), particularly amidst the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has now lasted over 300 days. IDF spokespersons revealed that intelligence assessments confirmed Deif’s presence at the targeted location during the strike on July 13. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called Deif’s elimination “a significant milestone in the process of dismantling Hamas as a military and governing authority in Gaza.”

The announcement of Deif’s death coincides with the recent assassination of Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran. Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device covertly planted in his guest house, marking a significant breach in the security provided by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
