Assistant Commandant Gen. Christopher Mahoney of the Marine Corps is urging Marines transitioning to civilian life to consider careers in shipyards. Mahoney emphasized the need for a national plan to incentivize young individuals to work in the shipbuilding industry, addressing the critical workforce shortage in the U.S. shipbuilding sector. He stressed that the domestic shipbuilding industry requires more resources to compete effectively with China, which boasts a larger navy. While specific pathways for Marines into shipyards are still in the idea phase, industry partnerships and apprenticeship programs are potential avenues to encourage Marine veterans to enter the trades and contribute to the shipbuilding workforce.
