Iranian authorities claimed that they have dismantled alleged spy networks linked to the United States and Israel in the northern Mazandaran province.
Speaking to the Tasnim news agency on Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Siavash Moslemi, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Mazandaran said: “with precise intelligence monitoring, we have successfully dismantled infiltration and espionage networks associated with US intelligence, the Zionist regime and other hostile countries.”
Moslemi said the agents entered the country as foreign nationals or visitors posing as members of trade companies, cultural centers, and charitable organizations “to gather information and establish networks of influence” in Iran.
Specific details regarding the number of individuals arrested and the evidence linking them to U.S. or Israeli intelligence services have not been disclosed.
Moslemi noted that the success in dismantling the alleged networks “prevented security threats and potential crises.”
As of press time, neither the U.S. nor Israel have made any public statements regarding the arrests.
The announcement comes a day after the Iranian judiciary announced that two British nationals, Craig and Lindsay Foreman have been charged for alleged espionage activities. The couple, who was arrested in the southeastern province of Kerman in January, was accused of gathering information across various Iranian provinces under the pretense of tourism and research.
