French President Emmanuel Macron announced on June 7 the formation of a coalition of countries to send military instructors to Ukraine. Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a joint press conference, Macron emphasized the practicality and efficiency of training Ukrainian soldiers on their own soil, stating that such a move is not an escalation of conflict with Russia.
“We are not at war with Russia, we do not want an escalation, but we want to do everything we can to help Ukraine resist,” Macron said. He further explained that several allies have already agreed to join the coalition, and efforts in the coming days would focus on finalizing the coalition’s structure to meet Ukraine’s request for military training.
The coalition’s goal is to support Ukraine as it ramps up its mobilization efforts amidst ongoing conflict with Russia. Macron highlighted the legitimacy of Ukraine’s request for training and mentioned that it would help in mobilizing thousands of new soldiers more effectively.
In addition to the coalition, Macron announced that France would provide Ukraine with Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets and train Ukrainian pilots. He indicated that training programs for pilots and mechanics would begin soon, aiming to have them operational by the end of the year.
The French President also addressed the broader context of the conflict, noting the significant losses and strategic shifts within the Ukrainian military. With recent Russian advances in the eastern Kharkiv region, Ukraine has sought increased military support from Europe. The U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby noted that recent U.S. aid has helped Ukraine thwart Russian advances, particularly around Kharkiv.
Macron also reiterated France’s support for Ukraine’s EU membership, aiming to launch membership negotiations by the end of the month. He affirmed that France and its allies stand with Ukraine, supporting its right to defend itself against Russian aggression.
During the press conference, Macron emphasized that peace would only come through adherence to international law, allowing Ukraine to defend its sovereignty. This stance was echoed by Zelensky, who expressed support for Macron’s initiative and stressed the importance of quick and effective training for Ukrainian forces.
