In preparation for the Paris Olympics set for this summer, France has reached out to 46 countries, requesting additional security personnel to ensure the safety and security of the Games. The French Interior Ministry disclosed that in January, it sought the assistance of nearly 2,185 police officers from abroad to aid in managing security and enhancing the spectator experience during the event.
The French Defense Ministry is also seeking support, requesting a smaller contingent of foreign military personnel. These individuals are expected to perform specific duties, including deploying sniffer dog teams for explosive detection. Poland and several other countries, including Israel, the United States, Germany, Britain, and Italy, have already responded positively, committing to send personnel to support the security operations.
Paris is gearing up to host its first Olympics in a century amid heightened security concerns, prompted by previous attacks in the city and the general global security climate. The government has placed the country on its highest security alert following a recent attack at a Russian concert hall and subsequent threats. The opening ceremony, particularly, is under focus due to its unique setup involving boats along the Seine River, attracting large crowds.
The French government plans a comprehensive security deployment, including about 45,000 police and security forces, 20,000 private security agents, and approximately 15,000 military personnel each day of the Games. This extensive preparation reflects the significance placed on ensuring a safe and secure environment for the estimated 15 million visitors and participants in the July 26-Aug. 11 Games and the subsequent Paralympics.
