Former Bolivian President Evo Morales claimed on Sunday that he survived an assassination attempt after gunshots struck his vehicle in the Chapare region. Morales, unharmed in the incident, shared a video showing bullet holes in the windshield, alleging that agents of President Luis Arce’s government targeted him.

According to Morales, two vehicles with armed men ambushed his convoy near a military barracks, firing shots that narrowly missed him and injured his driver. Morales described the attack as an effort to eliminate him politically.

President Arce and Morales, his one-time ally, are battling for the future of Bolivia’s splintering Movement for Socialism, known by its Spanish acronym MAS, ahead of elections in 2025.

For weeks, Morales has drawn large crowds at rallies, criticizing the government as ineffective. Clashes between Morales’ supporters and police have escalated, leaving 14 officers injured and dozens of protesters arrested. Morales’ faction accused Arce’s government of authoritarian tactics, while Arce has blamed Morales for destabilizing the country.

Deputy Security Minister Roberto Rios denied government involvement in the alleged attack against Morales, saying authorities are investigating the claim “whether it is true or a lie.” Government sources suggested Morales may have staged the attack to gain political leverage.
