Expansion of Former Wagner Group Base in Mali by Russian Military

Recent satellite images have showcased significant construction activities at a military base within the Modibo Keita International Airport in Mali, a site formerly operated by the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary organization. The remnants of the organization are now reportedly functioning under the name of Russia’s “Expeditionary Corps.”

This construction effort is the first detailed visual confirmation of the site’s status since the transition of control and indicates Russia’s intention to sustain and possibly expand its military influence in Africa.

The satellite imagery, analyzed by Janes, a defense intelligence agency, reveals the construction of new roads and buildings, the clearing of land, and the start of excavation work in two areas of the base. A significant increase in the number of vehicles on-site, from a handful in July to over 40 in recent images, points to an uptick in activity. Additionally, the images indicate the development of what is believed to be a new administrative building and a covered storage area.
