China and the U.S. have resumed dialogue after a significant hiatus, but progress appears slow. In an attempt to facilitate communication, China has recruited the assistance of veteran diplomat, Henry Kissinger, marking his continued influence in Sino-U.S. relations.

Key Points:

  1. China and the U.S. have reopened discussions following a months-long pause, although their disagreements remain.
  2. China is seeking to improve communications with the U.S. by utilizing the services of trusted intermediaries.
  3. President Xi Jinping met with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, a figure instrumental in establishing bilateral relations in the 1970s, signifying his enduring role in diplomatic relations between the two nations.
  4. The Chinese leader’s warm reception of Kissinger, referring to him as an “old friend,” underscores the value China places on historical relationships in its diplomatic endeavors.
  5. The meeting took place at the same guesthouse where Kissinger and then-Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai had their groundbreaking meeting in 1971, signifying the historical importance of this engagement.
