A U.S. Army trainee at Fort Jackson in Colombia died during basic combat training, according to an Army statement released Sunday.
In a news release posted on Facebook, the Army said the soldier, assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, was “found deceased during training on April 24.
The name of the soldier has not been released. Army policy requires that the next of kin be notified before a public announcement is made. The cause of death was not disclosed.
“This is a tragic loss,” said Maj. Gen. Daryl O. Hood, Fort Jackson’s commanding general. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their family as well as the cadre and fellow trainees.”
Hood said Fort Jackson is providing resources to the family and members of the unit as they grieve the loss of the trainee.
Following the incident, Fort Jackson initiated a 48-hour training stand down for Charlie Company. The pause allows time for soldiers and leaders to process the loss and review procedures.
Fort Jackson, the Army’s largest basic training installation, has seen multiple deaths in recent years. In April 2024, Pfc. Veronica L. Wynn, 39, died after collapsing during training.
