Reports said that some of the attackers were disguised as police, complete with flashing lights, and were armed with Kalashnikov rifles and shotguns. They used explosives to breach the van and later exchanged gunfire with Carabinieri patrols who arrived at the scene.
No injuries or deaths were reported, and two suspects were captured while fleeing the scene.
Reports say the robbers seized a large amount of cash during the heist, though the exact total is not yet known. The manhunt for the remaining suspects is ongoing.
The robbery follows a series of recent highway heists, including a €2 million ($2.2 million) theft in a Calabria tunnel on Dec. 1 and a €400,000 ($440,000) robbery on the A14 near Ortona in Abruzzo on Jan. 5.
