Houthis Strike Israeli-Owned Tanker in Red Sea as Yemen Mourns Death of Prime Minister

The Houthis targeted an oil tanker in the Red Sea on Monday as hundreds of Yemenis mourned the death of Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi, who was killed last week along with several officials in an Israeli strike.

The group said they launched a missile at the Israeli-owned tanker Scarlet Ray near the Saudi Red Sea port of Yanbu.

Maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the strike but reported no damage. Eastern Pacific said in a statement that the tanker remained fully operational and all crew were safe.

The Houthis have repeatedly attacked Red Sea shipping since 2023, disrupting a trade route carrying about $1 trillion in goods annually. They frame the strikes as support for Palestinians in Gaza.

The Houthi strike against an Israeli tanker comes after the group detained 11 United Nations staff members, following a raid on U.N. offices in rebel-held areas.

Meanwhile, the funeral at Sanaa’s Shaab Mosque, broadcast by Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV, drew crowds chanting against Israel and the United States.

According to reports, Al-Rahawi was buried alongside ministers for foreign affairs, media, culture, and industry.
