President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States will sell billions of dollars worth of military equipment to NATO allies, which will then transfer much of it to Ukraine as part of efforts to support Kyiv’s defense against Russia.
The president did not provide additional details about the deal, which marks his first approval of offensive weapons transfers to Ukraine since returning to office. However, when asked if the package included Patriot air defense batteries and interceptor missiles, he responded, “it’s everything.”
A source familiar with the plan told Axios that the U.S. will sell about $10 billion worth of weapons to NATO allies in the first phase of the deal.
NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte said the deal involves “really massive numbers of military equipment,” including long-range missiles and ammunition. Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the U.K., the Netherlands, and Canada have expressed interest in participating.
Trump announced the arms deal shortly after giving Russia a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire. “We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” Trump said. “Tariffs at about 100%, you’d call them secondary tariffs. You know what that means.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he spoke with Trump and Rutte on Monday about ways to improve protection for civilians from Russian attacks and to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive positions.
“We appreciate the readiness to provide additional Patriots, and the U.S., Germany, and Norway are already working together on this. There will also be deliveries of other weapons to protect lives of our people and repel Russian assaults,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
In another post on X, Zelenskyy thanked Trump for his “willingness to support Ukraine.” He said they agreed to catch up more often by phone and coordinate next steps to end the war.
