Germany’s Bundeswehr has awarded Rheinmetall a €3.1 billion framework contract to supply and upgrade the “Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System” (IdZ-ES) platoon systems, marking a significant step in military digitization. The agreement, which runs through 2030, allows for the delivery of up to 368 platoon systems, modernizing the Bundeswehr’s land forces.
As part of the deal, Rheinmetall secured an initial €417 million contract on February 6 for 92 platoon systems, covering the upgrade of 68 existing units and the production of 24 new ones. Each platoon includes 34 soldier kits, equipped with enhanced communication systems, optics, and protective gear to improve battlefield effectiveness.
The IdZ-ES system integrates seamlessly with Puma infantry fighting vehicles and Boxer armored transport vehicles, enabling real-time data sharing and battlefield coordination. It also connects to the Digitization of Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) network, enhancing command and control efficiency. Rheinmetall, as the primary contractor, will oversee a network of 30+ subcontractors to deliver the systems.
Beyond infantry modernization, Rheinmetall also secured a €1.8 billion contract for the Tactical Wide Area Network for Land-Based Operations (TaWAN LBO), a communications system designed to connect frontline units with command centers. The project includes 102 Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV), outfitted with advanced communication modules and high-extendable antenna masts to ensure secure data transmission.
