The U.S. Navy achieved a significant milestone in its operational capabilities by inaugurating the service’s first Robotics Warfare (RW) specialist on Tuesday. This event comes shortly after the Navy announced the establishment of the new rating, reflecting the service’s strategic shift towards incorporating advanced unmanned and autonomous technologies into its operations.
The historic pinning ceremony was held at Naval Support Facility Arlington, Virginia, where Vice Adm. Rick Cheeseman, Chief of Naval Personnel, and Rear Adm. Jim Waters, Director of the Navy’s Personnel Plans and Policy Division, awarded Master Chief Christopher Rambert with the new RW rating insignia. Rambert, who previously served as an aviation electrician’s mate, expressed his honor in being the first to represent this pioneering role within the Navy.
The RW rating is designed to oversee both active and passive payload systems and sensors, along with the maintenance of these sophisticated robotics systems. The introduction of this rating is part of the Navy’s ambitious plan to develop a hybrid fleet, integrating manned and unmanned systems to enhance the service’s operational effectiveness and strategic reach.
The initial pool of candidates eligible to convert to the RW rating will primarily consist of sailors currently assigned to unmanned vehicle divisions or those holding relevant Navy enlisted classification codes. The Navy emphasizes that selection for the RW rating will be highly selective, with community requirements and operational needs dictating the staffing levels
