The Light Reaction Regiment (LRR) is the Philippine Army’s principal counterterrorism unit, founded on February 1, 2004. Sometimes referred to as the Philippine Delta Force, the LRR was trained by American special forces and has been involved in various missions, including hostage rescue operations in Mindanao. However, their history includes both commendations and controversies, such as involvement in civilian deaths during combat operations against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Key Points:

  1. The LRR, established in 2004, conducts counterterrorism and special forces operations on Philippine soil, with its motto being “Tiradores de la Muerte” (Sharpshooters of Death).
  2. Trained by the U.S., the LRR’s origins trace back to a collaboration between the US Pacific Command, the Philippine Government, and the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) in 2000.
  3. The unit underwent two name changes: initially as the Light Reaction Battalion in 2008, and later as the Light Reaction Regiment in 2014, reflecting its growth and involvement in major operations.
  4. The LRR faced a scandal in 2008 when some operators were suspended due to allegations of killing civilians during combat with the MILF, based on false information from an unreliable informant.
  5. The LRR’s doctrine revolves around Counterterrorism, Special Operations, and Unconventional Warfare, with rigorous training programs in place for its members, including a Counter Terrorism Course and a specialized sniper course.
