For the first time since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. China also announced its desire to send an envoy to Kyiv to broker a “political settlement”.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has spoken to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. China has expressed its intention to send an envoy to Kyiv to mediate a “political settlement”. The phone call lasted nearly an hour and was called “long and meaningful” by Zelenskyy. China has not taken sides in the conflict but says it is well-placed to help mediate. The call between Xi and Zelenskyy comes after Xi’s visit to Moscow in March, where he expressed willingness to speak to the Ukrainian president.
