Volunteer Pilot Faces Threat of Arrest While Rescuing Stranded Couple After Hurricane

Volunteer pilot Jordan Seidhom and his son made daring rescues after Hurricane Helene devastated North Carolina’s Lake Lure region, but their efforts were unexpectedly halted by a local fire official. Seidhom, who flew to the disaster zone using his own helicopter, saved multiple stranded people, including Susan Coffey, who had been trapped with her husband Mike for over two days after floodwaters destroyed their home.

Seidhom’s rescue of Susan Coffey went smoothly until he returned to collect Mike, only to be threatened with arrest by Lake Lure Assistant Fire Chief Chris Melton if he continued his efforts. Despite coordinating with law enforcement and other emergency responders, Melton insisted that Seidhom cease operations, leading the pilot to reluctantly abandon the mission to avoid arrest.

After separating the couple, Mike Coffey hiked down the mountain and was eventually rescued by another team, but both he and his wife questioned why a pilot willing to help was turned away. Despite the obstacles, Seidhom and his son returned to continue assisting rescue efforts the next day, even as tensions lingered over the incident.
