A new wave of startups and venture capital investments is focusing on off-road autonomous vehicle (AV) technology, diverging from the urban robotaxi trend. Among the leading companies in this niche are Seattle-based Overland AI and New Brunswick’s Potential Motors.
Overland AI, founded in 2022, is creating self-driving systems for military uses, such as reconnaissance and electronic warfare. The U.S. Army’s Defense Innovation Unit recently awarded the company up to $18.6 million to develop a prototype autonomous software stack for robotic combat vehicles. Additionally, Overland AI secured a $10 million seed round from Point72 Ventures to expand its team and enhance its OverDrive autonomy stack.
We’re proud to announce our lead investment in Overland AI to support their progress in building intelligent uncrewed ground systems for defense and national security. No human should be put at risk when a machine can do the job. Read more here: https://t.co/EpicsB9jco

Potential Motors, which focuses on advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) for ATVs, underground mining vehicles, and passenger cars, recently raised a $1.5 million extension to its seed round from Brightspark Ventures, bringing its total funding to $6.2 million. The company is currently running pilot projects in various sectors to showcase its technology.
These startups are part of a broader trend of applying AV technology to non-public road environments. The high costs and technical challenges of commercial robotaxi and self-driving truck operations have led many companies to explore alternative applications. Other startups in this space include Polymath Robotics, Forterra, Pronto.ai, Bear Robotics, and Outrider, focusing on sectors like warehouses, mining, and industrial settings.
Autotech Ventures is investing heavily in off-road autonomy, especially in agriculture and construction. These sectors benefit from autonomous systems by addressing labor shortages, boosting productivity, and improving safety.
Overland AI’s technology stems from DARPA’s RACER program, aiming to enable autonomous navigation in complex off-road terrain using only onboard sensors. Potential Motors has developed ADAS systems for various off-road vehicles, demonstrating their capability through pilot projects.
