Jonathan Andrew Pebley, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was killed by a Russian drone strike while fighting for Ukraine.
According to military analyst and vlogger Chris Capelluto, Pebley, who used the callsign “Mayhem,” died while trying to help two fellow soldiers. “I’ve just been informed Mayhem is KIA (killed in action) in Ukraine. He died trying to save two of his buddies,” Capelluto wrote in an Instagram post last week.
Pebley, who is also an Iraq War veteran, joined Ukrainian forces in 2024 after arriving in the country that August. He served as a machine gunner in the “Delta Knights,” a unit under Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate.
In an interview with Capelluto earlier this year, Pebley said he had found a sense of purpose fighting in Ukraine.
“This is what I’m supposed to be doing, I feel at home again, everything makes a lot more sense, even though I don’t speak the language. Somehow, life makes more sense here than it did any time since I got out in 2009,” Pebley said.
At least 50 American citizens, including 40 former service members, have been killed in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, according to Military.com.
