German federal prosecutors have indicted an American citizen for allegedly offering to spy for China while employed at a U.S. military facility.

The indictment, filed earlier this month in the Koblenz state court, accuses the man, identified as Martin D., of approaching Chinese authorities in summer 2024 with an offer to share sensitive U.S. military information, the prosecutors said in a statement.

They have not disclosed what kind of information Martin D. sought to provide or whether he acted alone.

According to court documents, Martin D. worked for a U.S. defense contractor from 2017 to early 2023 and had been stationed at an American military installation in Hessen since at least 2020.

Prosecutors said he made repeated attempts to contact Chinese state bodies but was arrested before transferring any classified material. A warrant was issued on October 30, 2024, and he was taken into custody days later.

It is now up to the Koblenz court to determine if the case proceeds to trial and, if approved, schedule the proceedings.
